PENETRATION GRADE BITUMEN
EN Standard – Bitumen 70/100
Bitumen 70/100 is a softer grade of bitumen with a penetration range of 70 to 100 tenths of a millimetre. This grade is designed for applications in colder climates and areas with lighter traffic loads. Bitumen 70/100 offers excellent flexibility and adhesion properties, making it an ideal choice for regions where temperature fluctuations can cause surface cracking and other forms of pavement distress.
Derived from the distillation of crude oil, Bitumen 70/100 undergoes a refining process that enhances its ability to resist cracking and aging. Its chemical composition and physical properties make it an effective binder for asphalt mixtures, ensuring the durability and longevity of paved surfaces even in challenging conditions.
USES:
Bitumen 70/100 is used in a variety of construction and paving applications, particularly in regions with colder climates and lighter traffic volumes. Key uses include:
- Residential roads: Ideal for residential areas where traffic is light, and surface flexibility is essential to prevent cracking and other forms of distress.
- Light traffic areas: Suitable for roads and pavements that experience low to moderate traffic, providing a smooth and durable surface.
- Cold climate regions: Designed to perform well in colder temperatures, Bitumen 70/100 offers enhanced flexibility to withstand thermal contraction and expansion.
QUALITY STANDARD:
Bitumen 70/100 adheres to the stringent requirements set forth by the European Standard EN 12591. This standard guarantees that the bitumen meets specific criteria, including:
- Penetration: Ensures the bitumen’s hardness and suitability for various applications.
- Softening point: Indicates the temperature at which the bitumen begins to soften, ensuring it performs well under high-temperature conditions.
- Flash point: A measure of the bitumen’s safety in terms of its volatility and risk of ignition.
- Solubility: Ensures the bitumen is free from impurities that could affect its performance.
- Adhering to these standards ensures that Bitumen 70/100 provides reliable and consistent performance across various construction projects.
STORAGE:
Maintain storage temperatures between 150°C and 180°C to prevent hardening and ensure the bitumen remains workable.
Use steel containers or bitumen tanks that are designed to handle high temperatures and prevent contamination.
Ensure storage facilities are well-ventilated, dry, and protected from moisture to prevent oxidation and degradation.
Avoid prolonged storage at high temperatures and frequent temperature fluctuations, which can lead to the hardening and loss of essential properties.
